Daily Painting | Marin Lilies - Emily Weil Art Sweetness and light! calla lilies are blooming again. and i never tire of their beauty or of using them as subject matter. why are they so compellingly lovely, springtime after springtime? one | enormous, dinner plate sized velvety petals that curve around the stamen with drama and grace. two | they pop up around every corner at this time of year. I just wanted to get out my tray of watercolors today and i didn’t care what i produced. i started working from a photo of lilies in my therapist lucy’s front yard, and it wasn’t quite working so i made it an abstract. i disappeared into art.

Daily Painting | Barnhill Lilies - Emily Weil Art Today after a blast of a morning playing at my new passion, paddling in a dragon boat in the alameda estuary, i came home to draw and paint, doing my best to be heedless of results. I’m in the painting groove again, doing small paintings for local gift shops. this is a blue columbine, and next i’ll do the wild iris that grows in the mountains. I can let go of worries and heartache at least for the afternoon. this painting started as a sheet of yellow/ochre paint. as it dried in the sun, a leaf floated down and landed on it, so i kept it on the paper and painted over it. then i did it again and it didn’t work, but the heart shape happened. the magic of watercolors thrills me. I titled this painting “2020” as it felt appropriate. it contains all the roiling, messy feelings from that ridiculously crazy, painful year. 55″ x 65″ acrylic, oil pastel on canvas (stretched) = $4900.
